bundle
Cedar shakes are packed in units called bundles. It takes approximately 5 bundles to equal a square, which is the universal unit of measurement that describes the amount of roofing material it takes to cover a 10' x 10' area (100 sq. ft.).

cedar shake
Cedar shakes are a roofing product made from the heart wood of Western Red Cedar trees. Usually 18" to 24" in length and 1/2" to 7/8" thick, cedar shake roofing is more durable than cedar shingles. Cedar shakes are hand-split on one side and sawn on the other.

cedar shingle
Cedar shingles are also made from Western Red Cedar trees, but are thinner and shorter than cedar shakes. Cedar shingles are an excellent siding material, but shakes are clearly the superior roofing material because of their long life and resistance to the elements. Cedar shingles are sawn on both sides.

FTX®
FTX is a fire retardant chemical applied at the plant to make cedar shakes permanently resistant to fire. In California, building code requires that fire retardant shakes be used for reroof and new construction projects. FTX is the only fire retardant for cedar shake roofing approved by the California State Fire Marshal.

hand-split
Cedar shakes that are hand-split have a rugged and grainy appearance, as opposed to sawn cedar shakes, which have a less textured appearance.

CCA
Meeker cedar shakes treated with CCA (chromated copper arsenate) resist wood decay caused by fungus in extremely hot and humid climates.

weathering
As cedar shakes are exposed to the weather over the years, they undergo a natural change in color. This is refered to as weathering. After a few years, shakes will take on a silver-grey appearance. This color will then darken gradually over the life of the roof.

Western Red Cedar
Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata) is the species of cedar from which shakes are made. This tree is ideal for roofing material due to its natural preservatives, fine grain, light weight, and strength.
